In the surroundings around Meinerzhagen there are numerous places where a visit is more than worthwhile. If you just want to enjoy nature, you will find numerous possibilities to go on long walks, such as the Lister– and Biggesee.
With the Altena castle, the Dechenhöhle and the Attahöhle you will find three historical excursion destinations in the surroundings of the hotel. The Altena castle was built in the 12th century and gained its present popularity through the first hostel across the borders of the Sauerland to the wide world. As a museum of the county Mark, the castle offers an exhibition ranging from the early geological history of the Middle Ages, the Early Modern Period and the industrial age to the present day.
The Dechenhöhle near Iserlohn-Letmathe is one of the most impressive dripstone caves in Germany. Widely branched halls and grottos with an immeasurable treasure of dripstone formations have captivated the visitors for generations. Puff thin Sinter curtains glimmer transparent, crystals glitter, bizarre columns rise from the marble-like dripstone floor and make the dike cave to become an underground palace.
The Attahöhle at Attendorn is still full of secrets, enchants visitors from all over the world every year and, with its 91 years as a “fairytail fairy”, still has the reputation of being still a “cave virgin”. With increasing age, she gains fascination, attracts holidaymakers, adventurers and cave explorers. The experts agree: the limestone paradise in the Sauerland is the largest cohesive cave system in Germany.
